Technology and Innovation in Mining – How MMG leverages technology and innovation to maximise operational performance.

Austmine is pleased to welcome Reinhardt Viljoen, Group Manager Metallurgy at MMG to our Smart Mining Networking event.

Technology and innovation have become buzzwords in the mining industry and we all agree it can be instrumental in staying competitive. But to truly add value, we need to know how to leverage the right technology and innovation to deal with the challenges we are facing. Reinhardt will be sharing his thoughts and experiences on this subject and present several examples of how MMG has successfully leveraged technology and innovation to deliver improved results. At the same time he will cover the challenges we face when implementing new technologies and what it means for METS community.

Reinhardt has 25 years’ experience in the mining industry.  During this time he has gained deep operational experience operating and managing process plants across a variety of commodities. Starting off in the gold mining industry in South Africa, followed by several years in the ferrochrome smelting with Xstrata Alloys.

He then moved over to base metal with WMC at Olympic Dam spending several years in the copper smelter and refinery. Ultimately spending 3 years as General Manager of the concentrator and smelter/refinery at Olympic Dam. Subsequently he stepped out of the operational roles and spent time involved with organisational design for BHP Billiton Operations, and Productivity Improvement. After leading Glencore Technology and gaining firsthand experience as a mining equipment/technology supplier he has taken on the role as Group Manager Metallurgy at MMG.

MMG develops copper, zinc and other base metal projects with its headquarters in Melbourne. Their operations are based both internationally (Las Bambas in Peru, Sepon in Laos and Kinsevere in the DRC) and locally (Golden Grove in Western Australia, Rosebery in Tasmania and Century Mine in Queensland).
