PNG Mining Overview:

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has long been one of Australia’s closest partners in regional trade. PNG’s reliance on the mining sector presents significant opportunities for Australian Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) companies, who have the technical expertise and advanced equipment that can counter some of PNG’s most pressing issues such as its harsh climate and underdeveloped infrastructure.

Whilst PNG’s economic growth has been forecast to decline from 4.3% in 2016 to 2.4% in 2017, the mining sector is expected to remain the most influential source of growth, with a number of large projects on the horizon including PanAust's Frieda River copper-gold mine, Nautilus Minerals deep sea mining Solwara project and Newcrest and Harmony Gold's joint venture Wafi-Golpu mine.

PNG predominantly mines gold, but is also home to a wide variety of metals, such as copper, rare earth metals, nickel, cobalt, chromium, iron and platinum. It is home to several large mining operations, including the Hidden Valley gold and silver mine operated by Harmony Gold, Newcrest’s Lihir open-cut gold mine, the OK Tedi gold and copper mine, owned by the government, and the Porgera Valley gold mine operated by Barrick Gold.

Mission Overview:

Austmine's mission will offer unparalleled access to major mine sites and exclusive networking opportunities with senior mining executives in PNG. The delegation will visit Newcrest's Lihir operations on Aniolam Island in the New Ireland Province. In the financial year ending 30 June 2016, Lihir produced 900,034 ounces of gold and has recently completed a pre-feasibility study of the area that affirmed the potential benefits of lateral mine development.

As well as site visits, attendees will have formal meetings with management and executives from Newcrest, Ok Tedi, Mining LtdBarrick Gold, St Barbara, Harmony Gold and others. There will also be a market briefing and meetings with the PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum who represent the mining industry and have many large miners and suppliers as members.

Proposed Agenda:

Mission Fee & Registration:
