Ghana Mining Overview:

Ghana has a long history of mining and is home to a range of commodities such as aluminium, lead, bauxite, diamonds and manganese. However, gold dominates the sector, with 90 tonnes mined last year, the second most in Africa and 10th highest in the world. Some of the largest gold producers in the world operate in Ghana and over 300 small-scale miners have operations or developments.

Newmont Mining hold two major open-pit assets in Ghana, the Akyem and Ahafo mines, Gold Fields have the Tarkwa and Damang projects, whilst AngloGold Ashanti operates the Iduapriem mine. Other miners with significant assets in Ghana include Golden Star Resources, Perseus Mining and Chirano Gold Mines.

Due to the presence of many multi-national mining companies, local businesses are familiar with the capabilities of Australian METS companies. Areas where significant opportunities include communications; automation and remote control; safety; processing, and water treatment.

Mission Overview:

Delegates will have the opportunity to visit three of the major gold operations in Ghana:

  • Gold Fields Tarkwa project - high-volume, grade-driven open-pit operation; Mineral Reserve grade from open pits is stable year-on-year at 1.24g/t (1.25g/t 2015); maintenance of capital waste strip to secure a steady flow of high-grade ore to the CIL plant remains a priority at Teberebie, Akontansi and Pepe pits.
  • AngloGold Ashanti's Iduapriem mine - open-pit mine and its processing facilities include a carbonin-pulp (CIP) plant with a gravity circuit. The gravity feed recovers about 30% of the gold with the remainder recovered by the CIP plant. Production in  2016 was 214,000oz of gold.
  • Newmont's Ahafo site - one of the biggest and well-established mine sites in Ghana, with production reaching 349,000oz in 2016. Newmont Mining recently announced plans to build a new underground mine and expand plant capacity by more than 50%, intending to extend profitable production through this at its Ahafo operations.

Meetings will also be organised with senior personnel from these companies, as well as other representatives from the Ghanaian mining industry.

  • In an environment where fuel for vehicles on site is expensive, effective fuel management systems for vehicles that can lead to reductions in the use and cost of fuel
  • Automation and remote control technology that can assist with improvements in the effectiveness and reliability of existing equipment, including in processing
  • Communications and safety technology, that can assist with issues around the monitoring of fatigue, and individual vehicle tracking of cars on site
  • Cost efficient measures and technology, to assist with dust suppression in climates where periodic rainfall is prevalent, and also for water treatment at site
