Austmine Sustainability Webinar Series Part 1 - Managing Mining's Waste

In a world which is increasingly connected, the mining industry is under close scrutiny from communities, government and investors. The benefits from mining can be vast for all stakeholders, but the future of the industry is inextricably linked to our ability to minimise the environmental footprint and community impact of operations, while maximising economic gains.

Key to mining’s future is innovation. We must look towards creative technologies, adaptive processes and new procedures to transform mining into a sustainable and safe practice, that communities are more willing to embrace.

This webinar series will feature presentations from industry experts on the pathway to achieving sustainability for the mining industry, exploring current trends and emerging innovations that are central to our future prosperity.

Part 1 of our Sustainability Series will be focused on managing mining’s waste. Waste materials generated throughout the extraction and processing of minerals can often have disastrous consequences for the environment if left unmanaged. Furthermore, there have been several high-profile tailings dam failures that have fixed the spotlight on this issue of waste management and demonstrated the catastrophic impacts it can have on local communities.

This webinar will discuss the current landscape of waste generation and management in the mining industry. Expert speakers will discuss the next generation waste management technologies and innovative strategies to tackle our challenges from a new perspective.

Topics discussed will include:

  • The intensifying challenges of managing mining’s waste
  • Reinventing mining’s processes to reduce hazardous waste in extraction and processing
  • Dry stacking of tailings and key projects in this space

Expert Speakers:

  • Ben Adair, CEO, CRC ORE
  • Sue Aitken, Principal Geotechnical Engineer, Manager Mining Services, Beca
  • Stuart Neilson, Business Development Manager, Texo

About the Speakers:

Ben Adair, CEO, CRC ORE

His interests are focused primarily on the application of mineral processing technologies for operational improvement with a particular focus on step change innovations to improve the energy, water and productivity signatures of mining operations.

Prior to taking up this role in November 2015, Ben had been with the University of Queensland (UQ) Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI). Here he served initially as the Director of the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), then as Director of the Rio Tinto Centre for Advanced Mineral Separation and finally as Deputy Director (Technical) of SMI. Prior to joining UQ, he worked in a variety of Industry roles including with Rio Tinto (in the USA and Australia) and in the South African Platinum Industry.
