CHALLENGE #1: HARDWARE SELECTION
A number of best practices should be followed when selecting your LTE client. Beyond ruggedness, ensure that your LTE client supports the uplink requirements of your mobile applications. LTE typically faces a physical challenge through the availability of a single transmit antenna, this might be a problem on a haul truck, resulting in significant antenna blockage.
3D-P has designed the Osprey to integrate an RF switch allowing the UE to transmit on whichever antenna has the greatest signal quality.
CHALLENGE #2: L3 CONNECTIVITY
Many legacy mining applications require L2 connectivity, however LTE is a L3 technology. Tunnels or other solutions must be deployed in order to resolve this challenge, and management of those solutions through drops in coverage, roaming between Wi-Fi and LTE networks, can be particularly challenging.
3D-P has developed several solutions to help overcome these challenges. For example, the hybrid LTE/InstaMesh® Osprey allows the creation of a tunnel within InstaMesh to pass the data over the L3 link and back to the local network.
