Austmine Industry Leaders' Dinner and Awards - Celebrating 25 Years of Austmine!
Tonight in Brisbane Austmine is hosting our 25th Anniversary Celebration Industry Leaders' Dinner and Awards evening. With over 350 senior level miners and METS representatives in attendance, and a keynote speech from Jeyakumar Janakaraj, CEO of Adani Australia, the evening promises to be the highlight of the mining events calendar in 2015.
Originally known as Australia’s mining systems export strategy group, Austmine Limited was established by the Australian Trade Commission - Austrade in November 1989 as a result of its five-year industry strategy. Austmine’s role, along with the fellow industry organisations such AusRail, AusBio, AusAuto had the objective of boosting exports of Australian products and services to global markets. Back in those days, Australian suppliers would sell some $200 million of mining goods and services worldwide. Today, METS companies export over $15 billion annually.
In 1989, Austmine’s membership counted 56 companies which exported to 43 markets with key markets Indonesia, New Zealand, PNG, India and Thailand; today Australian METS work in over 200 countries. Early days surveys showed that nearly 50% of the companies had less than $10 million turnover, 28% had growth rates of more than 25%; and 21% have R&D expenditure greater than 5% of turnover. 25 years later the Australian METS sector is characterised by SMEs growing fast and leading the world with the industry’s best practice innovative technologies.
Austmine’s original mission was to “Work in partnership with Austrade to enhance the international business performance of the Australian mining equipment, services and supplies industry’ and although nowadays both organisations work independently; the relationship remains strong and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) of collaboration will be signed later this year.
Although today’s Austmine’s mission has slightly changed, our principles of driving innovation, leading collaboration and promoting Australian mining capability globally remain paramount for METS to continue significantly contributing to the growth of the Australian economy.
Our 4 awards this evening reflect these principles:
- Austmine Innovation Award for Miners
- Craig Senger Excellence in Export Award
- Austmine Champion of Innovation Award
