Austmine Innovation for Miners Award Finalists

Austmine Innovation for Miners Award Finalists

Austmine is excited to announce this year's finalists for our Innovation for Miners Award. The winner for this prestigious award will be announced at the Austmine Industry Leaders' Dinner and Awards on the 23rd May during our biennial conference Austmine 2017: Mining's Innovation Imperative.

Rio Tinto - RTVisTM

Rio Tinto is a leading global mining and metals group that focuses on finding, mining, processing and marketing the earth’s mineral resources. In 2007, Rio Tinto established the Rio Tinto Centre for Mine Automation at Sydney University. One of the major outputs from this collaboration was the Mine Automation System (MAS) and its associated internally developed 3D Visualisation tool – RTVisTM.

RTVisTM provides a three-dimensional visualisation front-end for MAS and currently assists over 1000 users across Rio Tinto to easily compare and evaluate mine information in real time.  RTVisTM enables personnel based locally or in remote facilities to make faster, more informed decisions based on information from multiple sources, fused together to provide a combined view. RTVisTM has an intuitive interface, is available across the whole business and runs on a standard desktop, promoting broader and deeper access to data which was historically only narrowly available. Therefore, creating new conversations and collaboration between departments. The RTVisTM is now deployed in over 85% of Rio Tinto’s open cut mines.

RUC Cementation – Dual implementation of TRAX and SMARTS

RUC Mining is a Western Australian based mining contractor. Originally established in Kalgoorlie in 1990, RUC Mining has spent the last 25 years defining itself as a global mining company which is now known for its involvement in full scale underground mechanised mining, shaft sinking, raise drilling and all aspects of specialised underground construction. In 2016 RUC Mining, in partnership with Minetec, implemented an underground tracking system (TRAX) and task management system (SMARTS) at Karari Underground Mine. In installing the two systems concurrently, they were able to provide operators with the necessary tools to become situationally aware of all activities being carried out around them. This was the first time both TRAX and SMARTS have been installed working in parallel with one another. This means that they are able to deliver a sub metre accuracy to underground, previously not possible in the underground environment. Advantages of this have been reducing unnecessary radio talk and eliminating both light and heavy vehicle interactions. Another advantage has been a decrease in downtime and an increase in fleet utilisation.

New Hope Group - ABAS

The New Hope Group is an Australian owned and operation diversified energy company, proudly based in South East Queensland. At New Hope’s West Moreton Jeebropilly Mine, the minable resources are situated on either side of a highway, therefore trucks are required to travel under a bridge, presenting a risk of equipment making contact with the bridge. To avoid harm to personnel, equipment and the public, it was assessed that a hard barrier was required. The Automatic Braking System (ABAS) remotely controls the braking system of the trucks via a chain of signals initiated by a simple trip wire. Thanks to implementation the risk of a strike occurring with the bridge has been greatly reduced. This system can easily be adapted for other sites and situations as required.

New Hope Group – GRT

The New Hope Group is an Australian owned and operation diversified energy company, proudly based in South East Queensland. The New Hope Group have developed a Guard Resistivity Tool (GRT) to eliminate false positives in coal seam exploration. The GRT uses electrical conductivity, not density, to look for coal seams, using the same principles as the Lateral Log used in the oil & gas industry. The GRT is the first of its kind to be used in the coal mining industry and New Hope now use it as standard process in exploration. The data gathered from the GRT gives geologists a much better picture of what is in the ground, including a better reading on the quality of the coal. This has led to great financial savings as well as increased efficiency.

PanAust – Custom-built jacking stands

PanAust is an Australian-headquartered copper and gold producer with producing assets in Laos and a portfolio of organic growth projects in Laos, PNG, Myanmar and Chile. The mobile maintenance team at PanAust’s Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation, with assistance from Global Bucket Solution (GBS) designed custom-built jacking stands that significantly improve the work required to separate carbody from PC3000 250t face shovels, O&K RH90 180t face shovels and PC2000 200t excavator truck frames during the routine replacements of slew ring bearings. This has fundamentally improved the process of changing out slew ring bearings in the PanAust’s primary digging fleet. This innovation has the potential to enhance workplace safety and efficiency; already PanAust has noticed a vast improvement in the quality of workmanship and employee comfort from this implementation.
