Meet the Innovator: Terry Stinson How Do You Grow a Technology Company to $500 Million in Sales?

CORE's Meet the Innovator series connects you to innovators in the resources and energy sector, sharing insights about their business, professional journey and global opportunities. It is your opportunity to ask questions and meet some of the brightest minds in the sector.

Our guest Innovator for July is Terry Stinson, former CEO and currently Non-executive Director of Orbital Corporation Pty Ltd., Non-Executive Chairman of Talga Resources and Non-Executive Chairman of Carnegie Clean Energy. Terry Stinson has over 35 years of international experience in R&D and technology commercialisation across automotive, aerospace, defence, marine, mining and other sectors. This is a rare opportunity to meet Terry and learn from his vast experience leading a range of multinational start-up ventures and the development of new technologies across several sectors.

When speaking with Terry you quickly learn that he is passionate about commercialising innovation.   This innovation is continuing with Talga as they scale up in Europe and are quickly becoming the world leader in Graphene, the first two-dimensional material ever discovered at a mere one atom thick.  Graphene is also one of the strongest materials in the known with a tensile strength more than 100 times stronger than steel.  Carnegie Clean Energy is an Australian innovation icon and the worldwide leader in Wave Energy.  Carnegie has also expanded into other renewable energy fields including large scale solar and battery storage systems with many recent innovations in Utility Scale Hybrid Solar Power in Australia.

We hope you’ll take this opportunity to meet Terry and leverage his wealth of knowledge and experience to further your own aspirations, whatever they may be.

MEET TERRY

The innovations on an international scale started ramping up for Terry in the 1980s as Project Engineer for Chevrolet’s Corvette’s, LT-5 Engine.  The clean sheet LT-5 engine was a collaboration between General Motors, Mercury Marine, and Lotus in the U.K.  The Corvette ZR-1 with the new LT-5 engine exceeded all expectations, it had the fastest acceleration of any production car at the time, had a top speed of 290 km/h (180 mph), and even broke a 50-year, 24-hour speed record which it held for over 27 years.  All this while still meeting US targets for emissions and fuel economy.

Success with the Corvette was followed by innovations across several sectors and in many countries.  From new engine development with Yamaha in Japan, to the first Direct Injected (DI) Marine Outboard for Mercury Marine in US. He moved to Australia to start Synerject, developer and manufacturer of products and systems for motorcycles, watercraft, and other segments, then back to the US with Outboard Marine Corp developing a new line of marine engines.  Then Siemens based in North America, Europe and Asia, for automotive products and systems including innovation award winning Deka 7 fuel injection.

Then back to Australia and Orbital with innovation on many fronts, first to evolve Orbital from an engineering services company into a developer and manufacturer of advanced products and systems for automotive, aerospace and mining.  Evolving to today’s Orbital’s with the latest innovations and commercial successes in unmanned aircraft propulsion suppling to Insitu division of the Boeing Company.

Terry started the move from exec to non-exec in March of last year when he accepted the role of Non-Executive Chairman with Talga Resources, in August to Orbital Non-Executive Director and in November, Non-executive Chairman of Carnegie Clean Energy.  In addition, expanding innovation into Health and Wellness products as director of BiVida.
