CRCMining Builds Research Capability

CRCMining Builds Research Capability

CRC Mining is continuing to develop its research capability, most recently with welcoming back Susan Grandone as Program Leader of Excavation Technologies.

In her new role Susan will lead a variety of projects in the excavation and mining equipment technologies space, research areas which have tremendous potential to impact mining companies' bottom lines in both the short and long term.

CRCMining Chief Executive Officer Professor Paul Lever believes the need for innovation in the mining industry being greater than ever. "Expanding CRCMining's Hard Rock and Surface Mining program with talented, experienced people increases our ability to solve challenging research problems for the mining industry," he said.

"The extensive knowledge and experience Susan has gained from working with some of the world's largest mining companies and OEMs, along with her significant research background, is a tremendous asset to CRCMining, and to CRCMining's member companies."

Susan previously worked with CRCMining in 2003 as a Work Area Leader, leading studies and making research contributions to the ODC hard rock cutting technology, monitoring whilst drilling/rock recognition technologies, and around optimisation of dig, load and haul practices. In this role, Susan leveraged her previous experience working for Caterpillar Corporation as a Senior Research Engineer and Six Sigma Black Belt where she co-patented a method and system of forecasting compaction performance; and her experience working as a geologist in both the petroleum and mining industries.

Over the past 10 years, Susan gained significant hands-on operations experience in the hard rock and minerals mining industry, with Freeport McMoRan, Barrick, and Rio Tinto. Susan also gained her MBA during this time. Her roles encompassed mining operations, technology and innovation management, and most recently in a leadership role as Director of Capital Project Studies - Chief Advisor for Rio Tinto.

With a lifetime of experience within the mining industry, Susan is passionate about mining innovation. She brings to CRCMining experience in industry research, inventing and patenting technology, hands-on operations experience, and the ability to understand and assess the key business analytics necessary to turn viable research into outcomes. Susan employs a Six Sigma research methodology, driving value, and reducing risk and has a track record of delivering new technologies and innovative processes.

Susan's research is driven by facts and data, which enables her to develop robust business cases around research investment, assisting mining companies to focus on, and properly evaluate the potential of their investments in innovation.
