Mining’s Next Horizon Webinar Series: Part 1 - The Next Generation of Minerals – Powering Mining into the Future

The mining industry is ushering in a new way of operating, transformed by disruptive innovations, advanced digital technologies and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). This webinar series examines the rapid changes occurring in our industry and creates a vision of the future of mining.

New technologies and alternate energy are transforming minerals demand around the world.

Central to this is the battery revolution. Innovation and technological advancements are creating a future where traditional fuels like gas or diesel can be replaced by cleaner and potentially cheaper energy-storage batteries. This is driving demand for commodities needed in the production process of battery technology, including lithium, cobalt, graphite, platinum and nickel.

This webinar will examine the changing landscape of the mining industry driving demand for the next generation of minerals.

This webinar will explore:

  • Drivers of the demand and uses for the next generation of minerals
  • The global outlook for lithium and other battery commodities
  • Technology utilised for extraction and production of battery minerals
  • Key mineral deposits, jurisdictions and projects

Expert Speakers:

Gavin Becker, General Manager Business Development, Lepidico

Gavin Becker has been active for >40 years (since graduating as a metallurgist) in Australia, Southern Africa and many other parts of the world, gaining wide experience in the mining industry.  The bulk of his career has been spent with several well established mining industry related companies including Lepidico, Metallica Minerals, GHD, Gladstone Pacific Nickel, URS Corporation, Dominion Mining, Western Mining Corporation, Davy McKee, Mintek and Anglo American.

Gavin will discuss the sources of demand for lithium and the driver of decreased battery costs, key projects on the horizon and prospective regions for the next generation of minerals and processing and mining methodologies.

David Morgan, Market Consultant, NC Chem Pty Ltd

David Morgan has been a successful senior marketer for nickel and cobalt and their associated specialty chemicals products for more than 25 years. Having worked in Australia, London and Singapore for Queensland Nickel and BHP before working more recently as a consultant in the nickel and cobalt industry. He graduated as a chemical engineer and started his career as process engineer in a nickel refinery before moving into sales and marketing with a particular focus on the development of cobalt and nickel chemicals into the rechargeable battery industry.

David will discuss the current and future sources for nickel and its byproduct cobalt. The rapidly growing demand for these commodities plus the challenges the industry faces increasing supply in a cost-effective manner the coming decade, particularly for the rechargeable battery industry.
