METS Tech Talk: Cleaning up our Act – Emerging Innovations in Water & Waste Management

Austmine’s METS Tech Talks Webinar Series will put the spotlight on the latest innovations and game-changing solutions set to transform the mining industry as we know it.

Our sixth session will focus on ‘Cleaning up our Act – Emerging Innovations in Water & Waste Management.’

There is no doubt that water is the world’s most important shared resource. However, an ever-increasing global population, growing urbanisation, climate change and contamination is placing great strain on global freshwater resources. Mining is typically a water intensive industry and will paly a critical role in tackling this issue through the implementation of new technologies and solutions.

This webinar will explore the latest updates in water and waste managing for the mining industry. METS companies will discuss game-changing solutions in tailings management, waste reduction and water efficiency.

Presentations:

Recovering Process water from tailings
Selwyn Oliveira, Energy and Mining Division Manager, Alfa Laval

We all know that mining and mineral processing requires copious amounts of fresh water.  Most mining companies are looking at ways to guarantee water security and conduct mining in a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable way.  This would not only be beneficial to their operations but also to the surrounding community as well.  Governmental authorities are imposing stricter legislation on miners regarding water usage as well as tailings storage facilities.  One of the most cost effective ways of dewatering tailings and reusing the process water is solid bowl centrifuge technology.  Alfa Laval are at the forefront of this technology and have pioneered centrifuge dewatering solutions in Australian mining industry.  Hope you would like to know more about our technology.

Concentrated Solar - Pure water to zero liquids discharge
Hensley Wee, Business Development Manager, JWA Oilfield Supplies

By concentrating the sun's energy to a focal point, we heat the input stream of (1) non-ideal sources of water OR (2) any pumpable slurry through our patented multi-effects distillation technology. This can continually remove pure water through to the point of zero liquids discharge.
