Austmine's 2015 Award Winners

On Tuesday 19th May 2015 at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane, Austmine were delighted to host our biennial Industry Leaders' Dinner and Awards evening, as part of the Austmine 2015: Transforming Mining conference. This evening was particularly special, as it represented Austmine’s 25 year anniversary as the leading industry body for the mining equipment, technology and services sector.

Our keynote speaker for the evening was Jeyakumar Janakaraj, CEO of Adani Mining, who gave an excellent speech on Adani's present and future role within the Australian Mining sector, tapping into the key themes of the overarching event: Innovation and Collaboration.

The evening of course also featured Austmine's four exciting industry awards that recognise innovation and export excellence across the mining and METS sectors.

Up first was the inaugural Austmine Innovation Award for Miners. The winner of this award was Carbine Resources, for their work at the Mount Morgan Gold & Copper Mine to re-commercialise a previously noncommercial asset that has seen over 100 years of mining. Patrick Walta, Executive Director of Carbine Resources was on site to receive the award.

Christine Gibbs Stewart, CEO of Austmine commented:

"Carbine Resources demonstrated the true meaning of the word innovation in their award submission. Carbine have adapted ion exchange technology from the 1950s to application in the mining industry, specifically in the use of upfront selective removal of copper in order to recover gold at significantly lower operating costs. This is the key part of Carbine’s metallurgical flowsheet that will unlock the value of remaining gold and copper resources at the Mount Morgan Gold & Copper Mine.

This is a new award and Carbine Resources have set a high bar of expectation for future years. The judges highly commended Carbine Resources for their submission and noted them as an incredibly deserving winner."

The second award of the evening was the Craig Senger Excellence in Export Award. This is the fourth time Austmine have given the award, which celebrates excellence in export of Australian Mining, Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) globally. It is given in memory of Austrade Trade Commissioner Craig Senger who was a champion of exporting METS and was tragically killed in a terrorist attack on a hotel in Jakarta in July, 2009. Austmine were fortunate to be joined on the night by Joan and Kate Senger, Craig's mother and widow.

The winner of this award was Hy-Performance Fluid Power, and Sandra Gillanders, their CEO, was in attendance at the evening to accept the award.

Christine Gibbs Stewart, CEO of Austmine stated:

"The judging panel was impressed by Hy-Performance Fluid Power’s demonstrated commitment to an ongoing growth of their export markets, driven largely by CEO Sandra Gillanders. The company displayed an impressive agility in determining their export strategy, especially in light of providing a relatively niche product. Close and focused collaboration with local companies was also evident, and with strong year on year growth of export sales revenue and a high ratio of international to domestic sales, Hy-Performance Fluid Power are a very deserving winner of this award."

Up third on the night was another new award, the Austmine Champion of Innovation. This award was introduced to have an individual recognition award for those who consistently contributed to driving innovation in the mining and METS sectors throughout their career. Dan Alexander, Head of Open Forums at Anglo American was a judge for the award, and presented it on the night.

Bill Withers, founder of acQuire Technology Solutions took home the prize and was delighted to be the winner of this inaugural and prestigious award. Christine Gibbs Stewart, CEO of Austmine noted:

"Bill has dedicated over 30 years of his life to the global mining industry. After beginning his career in Australian Anglo American, Bill joined Metech in 1984 – a company of 1 at the time. He went on to become a shareholder and director in 1988 and Managing Director in 1993. In 1996 Bill coined the term “Geoscientific Information Management” and began developing the acQuire software which addressed a very real need in mining customers for a consistent drill hole management system.

Decades later, acQuire now provides solutions to over 450 sites in 220 companies, in 45 countries around the world. Our judges noted in particular how Bill has shown a sustained, pragmatic approach to innovation, in particular over the last 20 years of his career, contributing to a product that impacts across the entire life-cycle of a mine. Bill is a fantastic example of the impact a true champion of innovation can have upon this industry."

Up last, but far from least, was the 2nd Austmine Innovation Award for METS. This was the most fiercely competed award, with in excess of 20 individual submissions received and a tough decision to be made by the judges. After narrowing it down to our five finalists, Dingo were the ones who took home the prize on the night, with CEO, Paul Higgins accepting the award on behalf of his team, all of whom were delighted with the win.

Christine Gibbs Stewart, CEO of Austmine was one of the judging panel for this award, and said of Dingo's victory:

"Dingo was recognised by our judges as a company that has consistently demonstrated innovative thinking. Their Trakka Field Inspection App is a unique and novel development that is a simple, but incredibly effective method for addressing a very real need in the industry. It is intuitive, allows informed real-time decision making and fits smoothly into existing operations. Congratulations to Dingo!"

Austmine's awards take place every two years, as part of our biennial conference. The next award and conference will take place in May 2017, city TBC.
