Australia to host the IOM3 Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition final

The Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition, now in its 13th year, has visited 10 countries in five continents. This year the final will take place in Perth, Australia and will be sponsored by Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração (CBMM) and supported by Rolls-Royce.

The Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition has been organised and held annually by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and its Younger Members’ Committee since 2005. The competition, which is an extension of the UK Young Persons' Lecture Competition, began as a way of encouraging young materials and mining engineers and scientists to develop their presentation skills.

This year the brightest young minds from Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, the United States, Ireland and the UK have earned a place in this prestigious global event. The contestants represent young people who have developed excellent presentation skills, which is an essential requirement in today’s rapidly changing world.

Dr Phil Bischler, Chair of the IOM3 Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition judging panel, said, ‘We rely on scientists and engineers with such skills to convey technical information in an understandable way to report results, developments and potential applications to other non-specialists.’

‘I am always impressed by the depth of knowledge and enthusiasm demonstrated by every national finalist. Over the years there has been a significant and continuous improvement in presentation standards. All of the presentations in the past years have been of a standard suitable to impress the audience of any international materials, minerals and mining related conference or a board of a global business.’

On Thursday 12 October the talented finalists will compete in front of judges at the Curtin University, Perth. Members of the public, engineers and industry delegates are welcome to attend the free event.

Dr Bernie Rickinson, IOM3 Chief Executive, said, ‘The Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition provides a unique opportunity to link young professionals from abroad to countries that are key players in the materials world. This year, IOM3 is delighted to bring the final to the mining and innovation hub of Perth Australia.’

‘The event provides a great opportunity for young engineers and technologists to take centre stage and act as a focus and voice for the industry. We can expect a high standard in this year’s competition with Russia taking part for the first time. Judges will be looking for someone with enthusiasm, who can deliver well to interest other people in their chosen subject.’
