Innovation Profile: Atlas Copco

Atlas Copco is a leading Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in the mining sector, and has a long history of driving innovation.

In January 2014, a collaborative effort between Rio Tinto and Atlas Copco led to the first fully automated production bench drilling without human intervention at a test site here in Australia, at Rio's Technology and Innovation test quarry. The test used Atlas' SmartROC D65 drilling rig and represented a step change for the industry in automated drilling. This alliance between Rio Tinto and Atlas Copco had been initiated in 2008, with the challenge for Atlas Copco to deliver an automated drilling system that could seamlessly integrate with Rio Tinto's Mine Automation System (MAS).

Atlas Copco's partnership with Rio Tinto is just one of the ways they choose to drive innovation within their business. They actively seek collaborations with miners, but also other mining equipment, technology and service providers (METS), inventors, investors, academics and research institutions. Their global website includes an innovation portal where individuals or companies can submit their idea for consideration to Atlas. This kind of open innovation is driving significant improvements across the industry and is being embraced by miners (Anglo American and Gold Fields being two of the best examples) and METS alike.

Anglo American are in fact one of the other miners that Atlas Copco have a close working relationship with, and have done formally since 2012, focused on mechanical excavation technology for the hard rock mining sector. The end goal is a continuous mining system, based on mechanical rock cutting, a system which will improve safety and cost efficiency levels for mining. As of March 2015, this system was in an advanced stage, with proof-of-concept testing due to occur in Q3 of this calendar year.

Atlas are truly driving innovation across several technology segments of the mining sector, which is why Austmine are very excited to have Adrian Boeing, Automation Manager at Atlas Copco joining us on July 23rd in Perth to present at the Austmine Smart Networking event. Adrian will be presenting on:

  • Atlas Copco's world first surface drilling innovations
  • Open Data
  • Case studies on Atlas Copco's GPS and Teleremote Technology
  • Autonomous blast hole drilling technology

  • Austmine members and mining companies receive 50% off the price of tickets, meaning just $55 for two hours of innovation presentations, networking and sharing of ideas. Make sure you don't miss out, so register now.
