Thiess Wins $1.3bn Contract Extension at Curragh

This was originally published online by Australian Mining on 13th September 2019.

Thiess has been awarded a six-year, $1.3 billion contract extension by Coronado Global Resources to provide services at the Curragh coal mine in Queensland.

The CIMIC Group mining services provider will provide overburden removal and haulage, mining and run-of-mine rehandling services, equipment maintenance and pit dewatering services.

Thiess will continue delivery of its existing scope of works, including the operation and maintenance of the 1400-tonne electric rope shovel and ultra-class trucking fleet.

The contractor has operated at the metallurgical coal-rich Curragh mine in the Bowen Basin since 2004.

CIMIC chief executive officer Michael Wright said the contract extension reflected Thiess’ ongoing ability to create lasting value for its clients.

“Thiess has a consistent record of exceeding our client’s expectations at the mine, through a focus on operational excellence and innovation, and an unrelenting commitment to safety culture and outcomes at Curragh,” Wright said.

CIMIC executive mining and mineral processing and Thiess managing director Douglas Thompson said the company looked forward to continuing the strong record of delivery with Curragh.

“Over that time, we’ve developed a deep understanding of the site and its operations, helping to deliver optimal efficiency, productivity and cost performance,” Thompson said.

CIMIC companies, Sedgman and UGL, also provide various operations and maintenance contracts at the Curragh mine.
