Unearthed and BHP Billiton Team up for MineHack 2016

Unearthed and BHP Billiton have teamed up to present MineHack Perth: a unique hackathon for the innovation community with the opportunity to work alongside one of the world’s largest diversified resources companies. Using Unearthed’s 54-hour long hackathon model, you’ll work with real life data from BHP Billiton’s Western Australia Iron Ore operation in its pursuit of more efficient, effective and safer ways to work. Compete against other innovators and collaborate with some of BHP Billiton’s best to develop prototype solutions to valuable, sector-wide challenges.

Unearthed MineHack Perth
13-15 May, BHP Billiton: 125 St Georges Tce, Perth WA 6000

Unearthed MineHack Perth will take place from 13-15 May and look for innovative approaches to 4 + operational challenges with the potential to contribute significantly to bottom-line productivity on mining sites. Participants will build prototype solutions using real data from operations including haulage, excavation, dust mitigation and real-time failure prediction.

Launching Phase-X Challenge

We are excited to announce a new event in our international innovation program, Phase-X, a real life operational data and mine planning scenarios challenge.

About the challenge
The challenge, in partnership with BHP Billiton, is open to university students and research institutes around the world to devise an innovative and efficient solution to a defined challenge in open pit mining.

Participants will be given access to multiple sets of BHP Billiton’s operational data and asked to apply their mathematical minds to create the best algorithm for optimising open pit mining phases.

BHP Billiton has collaborated with Unearthed in support of its belief that innovation is essential to economic growth, and that science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) provide the foundation for an innovative culture. BHP Billiton’s partnerships with leading universities and research organisations, and now its cooperation with Unearthed, support the application of STEM disciplines with the aim to improve safe productivity and competitiveness in the global resources industry.

As with all Unearthed events, innovators will own the intellectual property they create, making the Phase-X Challenge an exciting opportunity to solve a world-class mathematical challenge applicable to an industry of substantial scale and global significance.
