This article was published on the Australian Mining website - 10/03/2017

Western Australia’s Curtin University has ranked second in the world for its mineral and mining engineering program in a global survey that analyses popular subject areas.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject, published annually since 2011, moved Curtin 17 positions higher than 2016 with the latest mineral and mining engineering ranking, behind only the Colorado School of Mines in the United States.

Australia also had two other universities in the top five for mineral and mining engineering, with The University of Queensland ranking third and The University of New South Wales fourth, respectively.

Curtin University hosts the WA School of Mines, which is based at both its Bentley campus in Perth and at Kalgoorlie-Boulder in the state’s Goldfields region.

Overall, the university ranked as a top 100 university in seven subjects.

Curtin vice-chancellor professor Deborah Terry said the results reflected the university’s long-standing reputation for innovation and high-quality research.

“Overall, the results are very positive with improved performance in a number of areas, especially in engineering – mineral and mining through the Curtin WA School of Mines, an outcome that reflects the university’s strong profile and performance in this important field,” Terry said.

Curtin’s WA School of Mines was first established in the Goldfields in 1902, initially setup in historic mining town, Coolgardie.

The ranking assesses performance across four areas – research, teaching, employability and internationalisation. It also reviews six performance indicators, including academic reputation and student-to-faculty ratio.
