Hunter Valley Unearthed Hackathon Results

We concluded our back to back events in NSW with our first regional Hunter Valley hackathon last weekend at Dantia Smart Hub (DaSH). Three industry challenges and data sets were opened up for innovators around Newcastle, from the NSW Dept of Industry and CMOC-Northparkes Mines. Some expert participants fought off sleep deprivation to code their way through the weekend, while for others it was their first time at a hackathon. With the help of expert mentors and a panel of distinguished judges we selected two top teams who took home the prizes.

The Winners:

1st Prize:

Team Arnut - Jeremy Miller, Tim Donohue and Wei Chen
Prototype: Team Arnut developed an automatic image segmentation algorithm to identify the main features in RGB drill core images. The outcome of this program is able to be applied to the drilling and geology industry for more accurate, accelerated, efficient characterisation of drill core sample on its mineralogy. Outstandingly, the 3 members of this team have no programming backgrounds and are mechanical engineers at the University of Newcastle NIER.
Challenge: NSW Government - Automate image analysis of Hylogger drill core data

2nd Prize and Young Innovator Award:

Students of the University of Newcastle Computing Society walked away with both 2nd Prize and Young Innovator Award.
Team Comp Soc- Brendan Rogers, James Arthur, James Cobon-Kerr, Marcos Cousens-Schulz, Richard Berry, Scott Butler, Tom Palmer, Yasmin Williams-Matrljan
Prototype: Team Comp Soc developed a continuously evolving algorithm to improve call sequences for Northparkes Mines, as well as a simulator to receive call sequences and provide a quick real-time efficiency evaluation.

Challenge: CMOC-Northparkes Mines - Improve the scheduling of autonomous loaders in our underground operations to optimise production
