Identify Safer Processes for Filter Press Maintenance

This challenge has closed and is no longer accepting applications.

Deadline: Friday 5th June 2020

Site: BMA Caval Ridge Mine (CVM)

Austmine and BHP invite you to prequalify for an open innovation supplier opportunity for the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) Caval Ridge Mine in Queensland.

Solutions are sought to identify safer processes for filter press maintenance.

If prequalified, you will be invited to participate in the BMA Project: Supply Opportunity - Pilot, workshop webinar on 18 June 2020 which will give you the opportunity to first-hand learn about the challenge from senior CVM wash plant maintenance personnel and present your solution concept.

The Challenge

The BMA Caval Ridge Mine is a high-quality, hard coking open cut coal mine in Moranbah, Queensland. The site operates 24 filter presses at their fixed wash plants. The filter presses use a filter belt on compression rollers to advance sludge material. Filter press belts can tear, rip and wear over time, requiring maintenance and replacement. The replacement process is manual and requires two maintenance operators to assist with rolling the belt into the filter press while another operator drives the machine at 10 - 20% speed. The two maintenance operators work within a close proximity of the rotating press machine and the process is inefficient.

Consequences

Filter belt replacement is being handled at risk and increases downtime during breakdowns.

Solution Requirements

Solutions are sought to identify safer processes for filter press maintenance.

Solutions will be considered that:

  • Minimise interaction of maintenance operators with the press machine during change of filter belts
  • Minimise downtime, reduce breakdowns and increase safety of operations
  • Replace manual tasks by a mechanised process with ability of remote control
  • Engineer a process to control accurate belt tension and alignment on the filter press rollers

Proven technologies

None
