IMARC 2016: Paul Lucey, CEO, Mine Vision Systems

The afternoon session on day one of Austmine's Technology Stream was full of exciting discussions and presentations that focused on "Future Mining: Technology Leading the Way".  Paul Lucey, CEO, Mine Vision Systems presented with Andrew Whibley, Head of Technology and Innovation, Gold Fields as they looked at their experience of journeying into the digital age of mining. 

Paul and Andrew presented the timeline of Mine Vision Systems, beginning in 2007 with the vision of Gold Fields to increase safety by removing people from the working face and increasing productivity through automation and digital mining. Gold Fields program began in 2007 with CMU on robotics in mining and were also conducting research into autonomous under ground equipment, including CAT Commander systems and Atlas Copco drill rigs. The robotics program finished in 2012, but the vision component continued to progress and Mine Vision Systems was founded in 2015, bringing advanced computer based vision and machine learning to Gold Fields and the mining industry.
