PETRA Data Science joins CEEC’s Visionary Sponsors

PETRA Data Science – Powerful Data Science Transforming Costs, Mining Energy and Productivity CEEC is delighted to announce that PETRA Data Science has joined our valued sponsors. PETRA Data Science is the first CEEC sponsor that operates primarily within the fields of data science and artificial intelligence machine learning. Data science is a disruptive technology rapidly being deployed by miners to boost productivity and improve energy efficiency.

PETRA Data Science Principal and Managing Director, Penny Stewart, said her team was excited to join CEEC in helping to drive efficiency improvements across the mining industry.

She said “We are aligned with CEEC’s mission of joining together and sharing learnings for the good of the industry.”

CEEC CEO Alison Keogh said PETRA Data Science’s sponsorship is a welcome contribution and the company brings new options to accelerate energy efficiency and productivity in the mining sector.

Alison Keogh said “PETRA Data Science joins CEEC’s existing visionary global sponsors from the mining sector, all active supporters of efficient mineral production and innovation breakthroughs. We look forward to sharing information on the power of data science and analytics to reduce costs and improve energy efficiency and productivity for miners.”

Revolutionary data science approaches are now helping miners add significant value, bringing powerful new tools to enhance energy and productivity improvement. In mines and their processing plants, unplanned downtime costs businesses. Downtime of major equipment such as a SAG mill at the head of the grinding circuit may account for a loss of up to 5% of a plant’s availability.

Penny Stewart said “Since PETRA’s SAG mill overload algorithms went live at Newcrest’s Lihir mine in PNG, overload events have been completely eliminated, adding significant value.

PETRA developed algorithms to predict SAG mill overload events, using SAG mill operating parameters tracked by the control system. This enables operators to prevent stoppages, and SAG mills can operate at maximum throughput with minimum risk of overload.”

Penny said PETRA Data Science was established to link mining professionals and data scientists to realise the value in petabytes to zettabytes of mining data collected each year. PETRA’s work has been taken on board by major miners.

“A machine learning algorithm is like a mathematical ear listening to Internet of Things (IoT) music to predict something is wrong, before it happens”, Penny Stewart explains.

Penny Stewart said PETRA Data Science’s team has a strong engineering background, which is a key to its success.

Penny Stewart said “We now have a team of nine supporting many mining companies to harness the power of big data in machine learning and optimisation. We use our engineering knowledge to derive engineering parameters from the raw data. Engineered data signals are typically 10% to 15% more reliable at detecting events than raw data signals. This brings real benefits in energy and productivity in mining.”

CEEC CEO Alison Keogh said without the valuable support of its sponsors, CEEC would be unable to deliver its global workshops on energy-efficient comminution and continue to freely provide the tools that mining and METS companies are using to benchmark and track productivity and energy efficiency improvements. Sponsors enable CEEC’s continued free service and tools, and new funding will progressively help CEEC develop new initiatives to accelerate mining comminution and processing efficiency improvements globally.

Alison Keogh noted “PETRA’s support of CEEC will help boost understanding of improvement options through transformative data analytics and new artificial intelligence tools. We appreciate the confidence PETRA has shown in CEEC through this important sponsorship”.

CEEC, a global not-for-profit company, is funded wholly by valued sponsorship from the mineral industry – Anglo American, Antofagasta Minerals, Ausenco, Barrick Gold, Bechtel, CITIC-HIC, Donhad, Eriez, FL Smidth, Freeport McMoran, Gekko Systems, Glencore Technology, Goldcorp, Hatch, Metso, New Gold Inc, Orica, Oz Minerals, PETRA Data Science, Sandvik, Steinert, TOMS Institute and Weir Minerals.

CEEC facilities and other in-kind support is kindly provided by AMIRA International, Austmine, IMARC, MEI, UQ Sustainable Minerals Institute and The AusIMM.
