QUT to Lead a Project with Caterpillar for Automation of Underground Mining Vehicles

This article was originally published on the METS Ignited website

The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has been successful in the Advance Queensland Innovation Partnerships program to fund a research project for the automation of underground mining vehicles.

In collaboration with project industry partner and international mining equipment manufacturer Caterpillar, QUT will receive $428,240 to develop technologies that would ultimately enable the automation of underground mining vehicles, led by Associate Professor Michael Milford from the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision at QUT.

The QUT project will tackle how to deal with the harsh environment of underground mining, and navigation challenges. The researchers will look to solutions based on developing a cost-effective, reliable camera-based positioning system for locating and tracking underground mining vehicles within one metre of accuracy as well as a sophisticated, multi-sensor system that provides centimetre-accurate positioning.

The Innovation Partnerships program, part of the $405 million Advance Queensland initiative, aims to support collaborative research and development projects involving both research organisations and industry to address industry and society issues in priority areas.

The program aims to address the barriers to commercialisation of research in Australia by getting industry and the research sector to develop solutions to industry needs.

METS Ignited - the growth centre for the mining equipment, technology and service sector - is hosted by and located at QUT.
