Roy Hill Powers Operations with Schneider Electric Software

Roy Hill has worked with Schneider Electric to implement a software solution to consolidate end-to-end operational visibility and optimise the mining value chain for the integrated iron ore operations.
The Pilbara operations involve a greenfield iron ore mine and mine processing plant, a heavy haul railway system from mine to port, port facilities in Port Hedland and a remote operations centre in Perth. Roy Hill designed these infrastructure components to produce 55 million tonnes (Mt) of iron ore a year.
Schneider Electric software and industry solutions vice president Doug Warren said Roy Hill, as a ground up development, had the ability to recruit its own people, establish its own culture, and define its own operating model with a focus on its own vision.
“What has resulted is an organisation free of bureaucracy where efficiency is readily possible through streamlined processes that can drive high performance, fit for purpose outcomes,” Warren said.
The mining industry has historically evolved with organisational silos, usually between mines, processing facilities and logistics, according to Schneider Electric.
In the age of increasing automation, data, and digitalisation, these silos can prevent end-to-end visibility and optimisation opportunities to realise resource to market potential.
Schneider Electric believes Roy Hill has been able to avoid these pitfalls with the help of the iron ore company’s ecosystem partners.
The software developer was selected as a vendor by Roy Hill for its mining industry solutions, industry experience and consultative approach.
Roy Hill’s mine and port operations include Schneider Electric’s electrical switchgear and distribution, variable frequency drives, critical power systems (UPS) and power monitoring systems.
In addition, Roy Hill implemented Schneider Electric’s industrial software offering tailored for the mining industry.
The processes and technologies are brought together at Roy Hill’s operations centre in Perth. In one room, Roy Hill’s operations, from real-time execution to scheduling to planning, and everything from the mine to the processing plant to rail and port are being monitored and controlled 1300km from the mine site.
