SRK Consulting has strengthened its underground mining team in Perth with the recent appointment of experienced mining engineer, Robert Urie.

Robert has some 24 years of operational and engineering experience across a wide range of underground and open-pit mining projects. He brings with him significant knowledge in the design, development and operation of complex underground projects.

“Robert’s operational knowledge and experience with deep and complex underground environments adds significant breadth and depth to our team and will benefit our clients across the mining value chain. He brings an owner’s-side perspective that will be invaluable in our project delivery,” says Chairman and Lead Underground Engineer, Simon Hanrahan.

“We do a significant amount of underground work in Australia and internationally, so expanding our skills base and building on the synergy between our mining engineering and geotechnical teams is a focus for us.”

Robert’s experience encompasses a range of commodities and has included mine design and scheduling, feasibility studies, operational reviews and optimisation, strategic planning, mining cost estimation, ventilation planning, infrastructure design and financial modelling.

Robert brings a wealth of operational experience to the business, having recently held roles with St Barbara, Gold Fields and Barrick. His most recent role of Project Study Manager - Australia for St Barbara augmented his skills in leading large-scale feasibility studies.

He has held a range of site-based roles in the Goldfields region, as well as working across several international mining operations. He was appointed as Underground Manager for Barrick’s Raleigh mine from 2008 to 2009 and Technical Services Manager for Gold Fields’ St Ives mine from 2009 to 2012, before moving into the role of Group Mining Engineer from 2012 to 2018.

Robert holds a Graduate Certificate in Applied Finance, alongside his Bachelor degree with First Class Honors in Mining Engineering.

“I’m looking forward to the new role with SRK,” says Robert. “It offers a great opportunity to use the experience I’ve gained in the industry to offer quality mining engineering input to our clients that will generate real value and allow them to develop robust and reliable future plans.”

Robert commenced as a Principal Consultant in SRK’s Perth office on 12 October.
