Caterpillar Forms Underground Tech Collaboration with Minetec

This article was originally posted to the Australian Mining website on 22 February 2018.

Caterpillar and Minetec have established a global licensing, technology development and marketing agreement targeting hard rock mining challenges.

The two companies will collaborate to expand and develop the Caterpillar Minestar technology solution for underground mining operations.

Caterpillar expects the integrated solutions to focus on applications of underground mobile equipment and to enable expansion of Minestar capabilities through the use of improvied high precision tracking and wireless communications, task management technology and proximity detection.

Minetec’s proprietary products — SMARTYS task management, TRAX high-precision tracking and wireless communications, and SafeDetect proximity detection — will be integrated into the Minstar solution.

Gold miner Newmont Mining will host the first trial of the technology at its Tanami operations in the Northern Territory.

“Newmont will provide operational input from their underground hard rock mining operations,” according to Cat.

The agreement also recognises the value of the technology developed by Minestar since it was acquired by Codan in 2012.

“While not expected to deliver material revenue in financial year 2018, this is an important milestone in our strategy to scale the Minetec business,” Minetec said in an ASX announcement.
