By Jessica Tyrrell, Marketing & Communications Coordinator, Austmine
Sundeep Singh, Global Procurement Officer, BHP helped set the agenda at IMARC 2019 with his opening address "Responsible sourcing, diversity and inclusion, and climate change; why these are critical considerations for doing business in 2020".
Sundeep noted that focusing on these areas are good for business and good for BHP, but when done well they can also offer incredible value for others. He acknowledged BHP’s “supply chain is, as the name suggests, is only as strong as its weakest link. As BHP’s group procurement officer, our supply chain spans 60 countries, 10,000 partners with an annual spend of US $20 billion across our capex and opex portfolio in FY19. We source 215,000 different types of material and equipment for our Australian operations alone. That’s a lot of decisions, a lot of investments and a lot of scope to positively influence.”
Sundeep utilised BHP’s goal to become a gender balanced organisation by 2025 as an example of how this positive social change has already produced positive business outcomes in other areas including a 67% reduction in injury rates, 11% increase in better adherence to schedules, workers having 11% more pride in their work and more.
One of the tangible ways in which BHP has committed to this goal is in their collaboration with Kal Tire, a tire management and fitment organization, to develop a ‘zero weight arm’. This tool removes the need for people to lift a torqueing tool, with a weight of about 20kgs, by holding the tool in position. This innovation removes the need for physical strength for this role, making it safer and more inclusive.
Sundeep ended the session saying, “I love the work we are doing with our suppliers. Work that demonstrates what’s possible when we partner, when we challenge and transform together. When we go after shared value… And that is what I am asking of you now. To act. Join us. To partner with us.”
