Koniambo Nickel Site Visit: Opportunities and Insights

Austmine was recently invited to participate in a regional forum in New Caledonia by our local partner organisation AMD (Association Maintenance Durable). The week included workshops surrounding innovation, education and training in the Asia Pacific, networking events with local businesses and site visits to major mining and processing operations.

The first site visit of the program was to the Koniambo Nickel (KNS) mining operation and processing facility. The project is the primary economic activity for the Northern Province of New Caledonia and is 51% owned by Société Minière du Sud Pacifique (SMSP) and 49% owned by Glencore. The operation produces ferronickel, mostly for production of stainless steel, and includes many open-pit mining areas, a 12km conveyor system, process plant, power plant and port facility. You can find out more about their process from pit to port here
