Indonesia is Western Australia’s tenth largest merchandise export market. Western Australia exported A$2.2 billion of goods to Indonesia in 2019, with the top exports being petroleum, iron ore and wheat.

Indonesia is Western Australia’s ninth largest source of merchandise imports. Western Australia imported A$1.1 billion of goods from Indonesia in 2019, with the top imports being refined petroleum oil, gold and crude oil.

Indonesia is Australia’s thirty-fourth largest source of foreign direct investment (A$17 million in 2019) and is the thirteenth largest destination for Australia’s direct investment abroad (A$3.5 billion in 2019).

In 2019, Western Australia had 38,800 visitors and 1,198 students from Indonesia. For Western Australian tourists, Indonesia is the most popular overseas destination, with 350,000 Western Australians visiting Indonesia in 2018.

Western Australia has a growing Indonesian community. In 2016, 11,000 Western Australian residents had Indonesian ancestry and 11,000 were born in Indonesia.

In August 1990, Western Australia and East Java signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Sister State Relationship, which has led to exchanges in food, agriculture, sport, education, disability services, government administration and parliamentary delegation visits.

The Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation supports Western Australia’s investment and trade with Indonesia through its Jakarta Office, which was established in 2003 (the State’s original office in Indonesia was opened in 1992 and located in Surabaya, East Java).
