White paper shares practical insights on the people side of mining

Employee engagement and soft skills have never been more important for the mining industry. A number of converging factors are changing the industry such as advanced digital technologies, emerging generations with different priorities around work, and increased social and environmental awareness. All of these changes affect the workforce, sometimes introducing new challenges, while also offering new opportunities around employee engagement.

This white paper describes employee engagement and disengagement from the perspective of the individual, organization and community and offers ideas for how to foster engagement and address disengagement. It also provides further discussion on the role of digital transformation as a challenge and enabler and considers the importance of engagement when it comes to health and safety and the broader community. It also includes a series of worksheets that individuals can use to help develop their soft skills.

The insights are those that were brought forward in the inaugural Mining Engagement Conference for Advancement (MECA) Symposium, held in Sudbury, Canada on October 9–11, 2019 in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The event closed with a Think Tank interactive session where delegates shared challenges and solutions for fostering engagement in the workforce. The content is based around this discussion and with information from the rest of the event. The Global Mining Guidelines Group (GMG) authored the paper to share these industry insights with the global community, such as the Workforce of the Future Working Group, which will be launching soon.
