Detecting & Eliminating Gamba Grass

Business Challenge

Rio Tinto is seeking a successful solution to detect and distinguish the invasive gamba grass from other species, allowing it to be completely eliminated. This is critical for mine rehabilitation, ensuring local biodiversity and ecosystem services in Weipa are protected.

Solutions Sought

Technologies and partners are sought to help explore new solutions, either as a standalone option or linked to Rio Tinto Weipa’s efforts across the rest of the weed control programme. Initially within the Andoom quarantine zone, this may be expanded to consider other areas across the lease pending the success and scope of the work proposed.

The solution being sought should be safe, environmentally sound and cost effective considering the remote location of the Weipa Operations.
