Protective Anode Coating for Aluminium Smelting

Business Challenge

What is the best way to apply a protective coating onto baked carbon anodes that are used during the production of aluminium? Rio Tinto Bell Bay is seeking solutions for a full-scale low cost automated anode coating process.

Solutions Needed

Adding a protective coating to carbon anodes reduces oxidation, which can reduce performance. Bell Bay Aluminium is one of Rio Tinto’s pioneers with carbon anode coating development and large-scale plant trials. A full-scale implementation to coat up to 700 anodes per day is being sought, which should be safe and cost effective. Find more information on the Rio Tinto Pioneer Portal.
